Chevalier Alexandre Francois Joseph de Clouet Liet Colonel, son of Jean Martin de Piettre and Francoise-Good Gambier, was born in 1727 in Cambrai, France, died on 30 Jul 1789 in New Orleans, LA1 at age 62, and was buried in 1789 in New Orleans, LA. Other names for Alexandre were Alexandre Francois Joseph de Clouet de Piedre and Alexandre Francois Joseph de Clouet de Piettre.

Research Notes: A "Statement and general inventory dated Sept. 5, 1789 was recorded at the St. Martin Parish Courthouse (OA-vol.7, #98) with Armand Ducrest and Jean Berard, both the Atakapas Post; Martin Duralde of "Oppeloussas," Francois Ceaar Boutte, Louis Grevember; de Lavillebeuvre as witnesses.
An "Act of the Widow and Children" is recorded in the St. Martin Parish Courthouse on Sept. 8, 1789 (OA-vol. 7, No. 90). The act by Louise and Alexandre Charles Chevalier Louis Brognier, her major son, brought the act. Witnesses were Berard, Martin Duralde, Armand Ducrest, Don Jean DelaVillebeuvre.

• Military Service: He became a cadet in the service of France on February 2, 1740; promoted to acting Major General on March 2, 1746; made Lieutenant Colonel on February 20, 1758; Captain on February 19, 1766; made Captain in service of Spain on June 4, 1768; and breveted Lieutenant Colonel on February 17, 1778. He saw service in France in the regiment of Compte Dragon, later Egmont, Pignatelly, and in Louisiana in the detached troops of the Navy, serving as Commandant and Judge of the Attakapas and Opelousas Posts from 1779-1786. He replaced Gabriel Fuselier de la Claire, until he, himself, was replaced by Captain Jean Farault de la Villebeuvre.

The campaigns and battles in which he took part in France include the battle of Mhin, in the Fontenoy, Noucour, all seiges of Flanders and its campaigns, in which he was made a prisoner of war. He was wounded twice in the assault on Bergonson. In Louisiana, in the service of Spain, he was at the taking of Fort Bute at Manchac and the siege of Baton Rouge on the Mississippi River.

• Story Goes...: He had compromised in a romantic affair a Beatrix de Choiseul, a sister to the Count de Stainville, who was French Minister under Louis XV. A "lettre de cachet" was issued in his name, but devoted friends took him from his home and brought him to Nantes, France. From there, he left for the United States.


Alexandre married Demoiselle Marie Louise de Favrot, daughter of Messire Claude Joseph de Favrot and Dame Louise Elizabeth Bruslé, on 11 May 1761 in New Orleans, LA. Marie was born on 11 Sep 1737 in New Orleans, LA and died in Dec 1814 at age 77.
